The Teachings of Al-Hallaj: Oneness, Love, and the Divine

Who Was Al-Hallaj?

Al-Hallaj was a mystic philosopher who lived in the 9th century. He was born in Persia and spent most of his life traveling throughout the Middle East and North Africa, teaching people about the Oneness of God and the love that exists between all creation.

Al-Hallaj was eventually martyred for his teachings, and his legacy has been felt throughout the spiritual world ever since. He is considered one of the most important Sufi masters of all time, and his writings continue to inspire people from all walks of life.

Louis Massignon discovered al-Hallaj's story and wrote about him in his dissertation. In many of Thomas Merton's later writings, he discusses the "point vierge," which was a term Massignon coined based on al-Hallaj's teachings.
